The San Antonio Monarch Butterfly and Pollinator Festival is a celebration of the monarch butterfly, pollinators, and the ecosystems that sustain both them and us.
The family-friendly FREE event will take place Saturday, October 3rd from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Pecan Grove at Brackenridge Park near the zoo entrance.
why monarch butterfly & Pollinator festival?
The Monarch Butterfly & Pollinator Festival brings together community partners dedicated to protecting pollinators and highlighting their essential role in our ecosystem through education and celebration. The day features pollinator-inspired costumes, face painting, food, music and family-friendly fun, while highlighting the meaningful progress Project Bloom and its mission-aligned partners are making to protect Texas’ wild and green spaces.
Every experience is designed to create actionable change. Whether it is planting milkweed, removing lawn, cutting out pesticides, picking up litter from waterways, or turning off lights during peak bird migration, the Monarch Butterfly and Pollinator Festival offers actions that individuals can take in their own lives to help protect our pollinators, our food systems and our global community on the planet.
What can you expect Festival day?
Adults and children alike are invited to “become pollinators,” in the People as Pollinators Experiment. In the Monarch Migration Obstacle course, children race across North America searching for milkweed as they dodge physical and environmental obstructions. In the Lights Out! Bird City Maze, the historic Koehler Pavilion becomes a maze with blackout curtains and people become migrating birds. Participants then navigate the 1800 sq ft maze using glow-in-the-dark stars as they get closer and closer to a city where hazards like windows, lights and house cats make the journey ever more treacherous. New this year is the Bizzee Bumblebee, where larger than life Texas wildflowers packed with pollen dot a prairie and participants must race against time to build their colony while avoiding predators.
Nonprofit education partners are invited to table at the festival to share their own work on behalf of pollinators with hands-on activities. Partners such as the Arboretum San Antonio, San Antonio River Authority, SAWS, SA Parks, Bexar Audubon, the Native Plant Society of Texas, Urban Canopy, and more than 40 others, offer their own opportunity for attendees to empathize with pollinators.
